Avast and Firefox Conflict

Firefox version: 2.0.0.13 Operating system: Windows XP
 
Q: Some times firefox and avast would conflict and it would stop firefox loading pages randomly while browsing. Now i've had this problem for a whil during updates of both programs and simply turning off the avast scanner and turning it on again allows me to continue browsing.
Does anyone have a work around for the problem that would let me keep firefox and avast? Does this problem affect firefox 3 beta versions? Thoughts?

A: All real-time antivirus programs will scan web page components as they enter the browser's on-disk cache. Some programs, such as Avast, also include a proxy that scans web page components before they reach Firefox. The proxy intercepts all your web requests, fetches the pages and other elements, and scans them before delivering them to Firefox. Probably it is this proxy that is stalling for some reason.
The support article (Error loading websites @ MozillaZine Knowledge Base — search for Avast in the page) describes a method by which you could reduce the number of files the proxy scans; this might cause less delay and less frequent hang-ups.
